Touchscreen Applications Grow as Organizational Digital Transformation Continues

 Publish Date :2024/04/03

Touchscreens are now commonplace for user facing devices as they become the go-to user interface for phones, tablets, and even certain laptops. However, they have also had a growing presence in industrial and organizational settings as more enterprises advance in their digital transformation efforts. Analog controllers can be replaced with a digital touchscreen or all-in-one PC. Smart digital displays are also able to show more relevant information to the viewers in a customizable setting instead of the static displays commonly seen in classic gauges or dials of old.

According to Verified Market Reports, the industrial touchscreen market was valued at USD 101 billion in 2023 and is expected to reach USD 196 billion by 2030; a CAGR of 10.1% during the forecasted period. This growth is further encouraged by the projected users’ growing familiarity with touchscreen technology, especially through personal devices such as smartphones and tablets. Further technology trends such as ruggedized touchscreens, multi-touch technology, better haptic feedback, etc. have also helped improve adoption rate.

Ruggedized form factors have become one of the main prerequisites to make sure the device will not be damaged when in harsh elements such as high heat or humidity, dust/ sand, strong vibration, etc. which are common in industrial areas. Higher standards such as IP65 will make sure the device can be used outdoors as well as indoors. Industrial device manufacturers such as Jetway, Senor Tech, etc. today offer a variety of devices with strong protection against the elements while making sure users can clearly read and see the information displayed on the screen.

By contrast, the commercial touchscreen market is relatively smaller than the industrial touchscreen market as Marketsandmarkets research reports that commercial touch display market is expected to grow from USD 5.8 billion in 2024 to USD 8.7 billion in 2029; a CAGR of 8.6% (approximately 5% the size of the industrial touchscreen market size). The report also stated that the main industry for this category will be healthcare, which means special hygiene features such as antimicrobial coatings would be necessary which is already a feature for medical grade products by many manufacturers including MACTRON GROUP and Wincomm.

The touchscreen market today includes multiple display technologies beyond LCD or LED as e-paper also grows in popularity. Mimicking regular paper to provide better readability and lower energy consumption. As companies aim to reduce carbon emission, this feature might be more desirable especially for displays that need to be operational for a long period of time.

This technology is also helpful for indoor applications as e-paper displays generally generate far less heat compared to standard display technologies which means less cooling will be necessary. E-paper display products are already available such as the one offered by AIMobile or for manufacturers aiming to include e-paper products in their portfolio, other companies such as Flat Display Technology also offer them as standalone modules that can be integrated into new products.

As digital transformation efforts across different segments continue, the touchscreen market will continue to grow. Partnerships between module manufacturers, device manufacturers, as well as business-level users will be helpful to develop more solutions to can solve certain application-specific problems.
