Better Memory is Necessary for Modern Applications

 Publish Date :2024/04/10

Memory is important for more than just consumer and organizational level computers and devices. With the purpose of making sure devices can operate faster and run hardware-intensive programs, memories are important for hardware ranging from personal computers to data centers, and more. Various industries also rely on memories, especially 5G, IoT, and automotive which are expected to drive the market in the near future.

According to a report by Fortune Business Insights, the memory device market was valued at USD 136.32 billion in 2022 and is expected to grow to USD 360.22 billion by 2029 at a CAGR of 14.9% during the forecast period. The memories market will focus on consumer electronics, IT & telecommunications, automotive, aerospace & defense, healthcare, as well as manufacturing, energy & utility, oil & gas, etc. Indeed, the ubiquity of computers make memory devices more important to make sure the systems work as intended with minimum to no lagging.

The memory industry has 4 main types: SRAM (static random-access memory), DRAM (dynamic random-access memory), MRAM (Magnetoresistive random-access memory), and Flash memory. Among the 4 segments, SRAM and DRAM take the first and second place by market size respectively. The SRAM segment had the highest revenue in 2021 due to the growth of consumer electronics such as smart phones and wearables. While currently in second place, the DRAM segment has a strong potential for growth, especially with the growing adoption of DRAM for generative AI (GenAI) and data centers.

A research by Mordor Intelligence estimated the value of the DRAM market in 2024 to be at USD 61.21 billion. The market is expected to grow to USD 170.08 billion by 2029 with a CAGR of 22.68% in the forecast period. There are multiple factors driving this growth as many devices or industries switch to adopt DRAM; including: personal computers, smartphones, datacenters, and more.

While a majority of DRAMs are in the DDR4 segment such as the products offered by Maxsun, Maximize Market Research shared that the newer DDR5 segment will have a significant growth at 19.3%. Companies today are investing heavily in the newer generation DDR5 segment, especially for personal computers and data centers. Companies including ADATA, AGI Technology, BIOSTAR, Datotek, G.SKILL, PNY, and TEAMGROUP have released their own DDR5 architecture based memory modules while maintaining some product lines with the older architecture such as DDR4.

Memory modules for personal devices such as for dedicated gaming hardware may focus more on heat dissipation and aesthetics in addition to performance. In contrast, industrial memory modules which will be utilized for automation, IoT/ AIoT, servers/ data centers, etc. will have additional capabilities to ensure the devices will be able to function properly and reliably. Features such as wider operating temperature, anti-sulfuration, underfill, additional coating, etc. will be helpful for industrial applications.

Necessity for memory modules will continue to grow, especially as new software and applications will require stronger and better hardware. Applications such as AI or GenAI will make high capacity memory modules more important to make sure they can function as intended.

■《About COMPUTEX TAIPEI》

COMPUTEX TAIPEI was founded and named by the then Chairman of Taipei Computer Association (TCA), Stan Shih. In 1985, TCA invited TAITRA to be a co-organizer of COMPUTEX TAIPEI. In 2016, the startup focused event, InnoVEX was introduced.
