Taiwan Climate Partnership Members Join RE100 for 100% Renewable Energy

 Publish Date :2021/10/19

Electricity and energy are constantly in growing demand as the scope of technology expands to all aspects of modern life. There are global initiatives promoting the utilization of more green or renewable energy such as RE100 which aims to bring together the world’s most influential businesses in transitioning to using 100% renewable electricity. Fossil fuel still accounts for about 80% of the global energy consumption and to reduce fossil fuel usage or carbon emission will create more significant changes. Joining RE100 means that the company will need to be able to source 100% renewable electricity at reasonable cost.

In June 2021, 8 leading tech companies in Taiwan: Acer, ASUS, AUO, Delta Electronics, LITEON, Microsoft Taiwan, PEGATRON, and TSMC founded the Taiwan Climate Partnership (TCP). The partnership aims to advocate carbon emissions reduction goals across their supply chains and raise awareness for the issue through close cooperation with international counterparts. The efforts include reducing energy usage and improving energy efficiency across the supply chain from not only the member companies, but also their partners and users/ consumers. Some member companies took one step further and built their own solar energy plant to supply to their operations facility or even provide energy to the local grid. Many TCP members also joined the RE100 initiative as a sign of commitment to achieving the 100% renewable energy goal.

Acer has recently joined the RE100 initiative and pledged to use 100% renewable energy by 2035. Acer has used green energy from 2013 and by 2020 has achieved 44% green energy use in their facilities. In 2017, Acer built a solar power plant with a total of four ground and rooftop arrays in the Aspire Park (Taoyuan city), generating about 3 million kWh of electricity each year. Acer has also installed renewable energy generators such as wind turbines and solar panels in their global facilities.

ASUS is also committed to using 100% renewable energy in their global operations. Their plan will start with 100% renewable energy usage in Taiwan by 2030. The same 100% renewable energy usage goal for their global operations is targeted to be achieved in 2035. As part of their climate action, ASUS also ensures that each year’s key products demonstrate energy-efficiency that’s 30% above the Energy Star standard as well as ensure that key suppliers achieve a 30% reduction in carbon intensity rates by 2025 compared to 2020.

In the same vein, Delta Electronics has joined the EV100 initiative in 2018 and became the first EV100 member that provides energy infrastructure facilities for electric vehicles. Their goal is to replace 150 active company cars with electric vehicles by 2030 and to install charging stations at all plants to promote the use of electric vehicles by employees and clients. Earlier this year, Delta Electronics also joined RE100 and aims to achieve 100% renewable electricity and carbon neutrality targets for its global operations by 2030.

As the world’s leading semiconductor manufacturers, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has also been taking active steps to respond to climate change and mitigate climate impact. These steps include committing to using 100% renewable energy in global operations before 2050, joining the RE100 initiative, and striving for clean production in all fabs; implementing 460 energy-saving measures and conserving 500 GWh in 2020. In addition, TSMC also aims to upgrade product energy efficiency.

About Taiwan Climate Partnership

The Taiwan Climate Partnership (TCP) was founded by 8 leading tech companies in Taiwan: Delta Electronics, TSMC, AUO, Microsoft Taiwan, LITEON, Acer, ASUS and PEGATRON. TCP aims to advocate reduce carbon emissions to the supply chain in actual practice, while raising awareness for the issue through close cooperation with international counterparts.

TCP is organizing the Taiwan Climate Partnership Pavilion in COMPUTEX CYBERWORLD featuring the 8 founding members and their projects. TCP will also hold an online summit organized by Business Weekly on carbon reduction on November 18. The summit will feature speakers from Delta Electronics, RE100, Acer, and more. Interested parties may register here. (event will be held in Chinese)
