Necessity as Opportunity for Innovations and Changes

 Publish Date :2022/01/20

Many technological developments have been accelerated by the pandemic as conventional methods and practices are not compatible with health and safety protocols to prevent the spread of the disease. These developments are most prevalent in areas where human interaction is done often and in a closed environment. The pandemic has also accelerated several digital trends that were in their early stages or revisited existing technologies with a different approach to create new smart technologies.

This edition of the COMPUTEX Special Report will discuss the combined key ideas from the second online COMPUTEX 2022 Symposium: New Smart Technology Experiences Lead Life into A New Era. Focusing on the developing trends of smart technology and life in the new era, the speakers have their own visions of the future. This article will combine the interconnected ideas to provide readers with a comprehensive coverage of the symposium especially as the world will see new technologies developed out of necessity turn into an everyday application.

The Opportunities and Threats of Offline to Online & Hybrid

Offline to online migrations have been a necessity for many industries; whether to increase customer pool or to reduce costs. For example, many businesses have pursued an online only strategy without utilizing any physical presence and found great success in it. The pandemic has encouraged even more businesses to adopt more online strategies out of necessity as health protocols actively discourage physical interaction. Many businesses that have never had to pivot away from a store only strategy might find this difficult not only due to the lack of experience & expertise, but also because the lack of clear starting point.

Online and hybrid migration will happen everywhere as seen with education and employment. Remote work and learning have now become normal as many functions in the modern society cannot be halted for too long, if at all. Remote work and learning actually brings about a new set of possibilities as geographic limitation is no longer an issue and commute will not be necessary. On the other hand, it might not be ideal for everyone as proper connection and devices will need to be prepared; often on the users’ side.

Remote work & learning will also need both personalization and differentiation to solve different purposes and fulfill specific requirements. For businesses, differentiation will be even more important as customers become more digitally savvy and brand loyalty becomes less of a factor in purchasing decisions. Remote work & learning will also mean that people might find it difficult to detach as home and office or campus are unified. Home decoration and personalization will then be more important to help improve comfort and reduce burnout.

New Human-Machine Interface

The pandemic has created a more independent society that is mainly online and digitally savvy out of necessity. Wearable devices have also become important accessories to have both for health maintenance and daily activities; often providing wearers with added convenience among other benefits. Health monitoring wearables such as smart watches will be very important for people with chronic conditions as they might not be able to visit the hospital as often as they would like or as they need to. Home health maintenance then becomes a possibility with the smart wearables that can help in the daily monitoring; especially if they can message the wearers’ primary healthcare providers in cases of emergency.

Even before the pandemic, people’s daily lives have become increasingly unified with their digital devices, especially smartphones. However, as they still need the users’ hands to operate, they might not be the best device when physical contact is to be avoided when possible. As a result, new smart devices might replace smartphones in the near future especially if it can perform the many functions that smartphones currently do. With technologies such as optical see-through (OST) augmented reality (AR), AR goggles might be a possible alternative especially if it can also be as multifunctional as smartphones.
