TSMC endeavors to respond to climate change and mitigate climate impact

Green manufacturing is the cornerstone of sustainable management at TSMC. We believe that corporate growth and environment protection should not be mutually exclusive; our goal is to become the global standard of eco-friendly corporations. To such ends, we integrate green management into daily operations and strive to carry out climate change, energy management and water management through introducing innovative green technologies.
As a responsible corporate citizen, TSMC endeavors to respond to climate change and mitigate climate impact to protect our shared global environment. In addition to signing the world's largest renewable energy purchase agreement in 2020, we further committed to using 100% renewable energy for global operations before 2050, becoming the world's first semiconductor company to join the RE100 initiative. In 2020, TSMC strived for clean production in all fabs, implementing 460 energy-saving measures and conserving 500 GWh. There are 1,700 GWh saved between 2016 and 2020. At the meantime, TSMC aggressively upgrades the energy efficiency of products. Energy efficiency of the most advanced product continues to double every two years. External research results have shown that we save 4 GWh of energy for every 1 GWh of energy used by TSMC to manufacture end products for customers. By increasing our energy efficiency, we are able to mitigate the impact of climate change.
In addition to expanding energy conservation initiatives and producing energy-efficient products, TSMC also continues to build green building certification plants. As of 2020, 34 fabs have received LEED gold international certifications and 23 fabs received EEWH certifications. TSMC also leads the global semiconductor industry with the largest LEED-certified architectural area.
After becoming the first semiconductor company in the world to achieve Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) Platinum certification in 2019, TSMC continued to achieve more AWS certifications. In 2020, TSMC broke records again by obtaining Platinum Certifications from AWS and received the highest score in semiconductor industry for 2 consecutive years.
TSMC will continue promoting green fab, green manufacturing, green supply chain and collaborating with business partner, industry, government, academia, and all of society to address the challenges of climate change.
